History of Sharif University of Technology

SUT is one of the largest and most reputable engineering schools in the Islamic Republic of Iran. It was established in 1965 (1344) under the name of
Aryarmehr University of Technology for the purpose of meeting the scientific & technological requirements of the country at a high level.
Thus, the first educational period of the new university began in the fall of 1966 (1345). At that time, there were 54 faculty members and a
total of 412 students who were selected by national university entrance examination.
In 1980 (1359), the university was renamed Sharif University of Technology. SUT now has a total of 300 full-time faculty members, approximately 430 part-time
faculty members and a student body of about 8,000.
Originally, the 20 hectar university campus housed four departments: Electrical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry. Since then, SUT has expanded its services so that today, it contains ten different departments in the fields of science and engineering which
provide students with the opportunity to concentrate their studies in specific areas of expertise.
All departments offer B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs.

Aims and Goals
The fundamental aims of Sharif University of Technology are three. The first is the creation of an institution where students can
be instructed in both theoretical and applied sciences with special emphasis on the particular needs of our society. The second is to teach
students the advanced knowledge and techniques required to participate in the modern fields of engineering and technology and to cultivate creative engineers, good scientists and innovative technologists.
The third is to educate persons as engineers who are readily employable, who contribute significantly to their jobs, who have a strong sense of public responsibility and a desire to continue to learn.
Particular emphasis is placed on the promotion of multi-disciplinary research at the graduate and doctoral levels.
The purpose of establishing SUT, therefore, was to establish a university that could educate experts with high levels of scientific and technical expertise and maintain a status of excellence on
par with other leading universities around the world, particularly in conducting scientific and technical research.
For this reason, besides employing prominent Iranian residents, Iranian graduates with high degrees from world leading universities were also invited to serve at the university. The integration
of eager young minds, scientific excellence and professional expertise not only helped raise the credibility of the university but also resulted in an educational revolution,
whereby traditional instructional and organizational systems and procedures were renovated and improved.

History of Alumni Association

The alumni association of SUT university was established in 1991 (1370), through the efforts of 70 active graduates and
various authorities of the university representing the Board of Founders. Subsequently, a Board of Trustees, including
60 permanent and alternative members, was elected by the founders and the SUT president. In the winter of 1991,
the Board of Trustees prepared to select the Executive Committee of the association, which would include 13 members
and 2 permanent and alternative inspectors, whereby the association initiated its formal activity. Along with its
establishment, efforts were also made to legally stabilize the association. Finally, therefore, in July 1997,
an official Act, approved by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, was issued for strengthening the
relationship between the university and graduates, which was mandated by a ministerial declaration of the
Ministry of Culture and High Education, including bylaws for the establishment of all graduate associations.
From that time, the legal basis and strategy for all future graduate associations of universities and educational
institutions in the country were ratified.
The first general assembly of the Founders Board, comprised of 17 graduates and faculty members, was held on September
1997 (Mehr 25, 1376), during which the Charter of the Association was defined and approved . The Charter considered
the necessity of enhancing the scientific level of Sharif graduates, improving the association and creating and
maintaining an ongoing cooperative relationship between academia, science and technology and industry, including the
sharing of scientific and technological expertise.

Aims and Goals

Goals of the SUT association include the following:
